Antique souvenir travel albums

An exhibit of
antique souvenir travel albums is on display at the Sutliff
Museum during the fall back to school season. Phebe Sutliff
(1859-1955) was a student at the
University
of Zurich, Switzerland, in 1890 and 1891 and while there, traveled
in the rest of Europe collecting souvenirs as she went. The albums on
exhibit are filled with photographs of cities she visited such as
Edinburgh, Scotland, Munich, Germany, Oberammergau, Bavaria, and
Oxford, England, Each small book is beautifully bound with typical
Victorian decoration and typefaces. The photographs inside provide
charming views of quaint towns and unspoiled countryside as well as
the outstanding architecture of the cities.
Phebe Sutliff was in many ways a typical Victorian, loving travel and
collecting souvenirs to bring home. However, she also was unusual for
her time in that she traveled alone, rather than with her mother or
some other suitable chaperone. She put her travel experiences to good
use when she returned to America and began to teach history at
Hiram College. From
there, she went to
Rockford Seminary in Illinois, to become Chair of the History and
English Department. In 1896, she was appointed president of that
school and under her leadership, it became an accredited four-year
college. Miss Sutliff kept this position, unusual for a Victorian
woman, until 1901 when her mother in Warren became ill and needed her.
She returned home to become an outstanding community activist as well
as her mother’s caretaker.
Phebe Sutliff’s souvenirs and other memorabilia may be viewed at the
Sutliff Museum from 2:00 to 4:00 every Wednesday through Saturday
afternoon.---Sally Thomas,
