Memorabilia from the collections of the Sutliff Museum

Silver service pieces from the Sutliff Museum collections.   Decorative Staffordshire dogs and a beautiful alabaster French clock adorn the mantel. Coin silverware made by early Ohio silversmiths, dishes and silver serving pieces are displayed, as well as documents relating to military service as early as 1794.

Slave hobble from the Sutliff Museum collections.   Hand-written letters pertaining to anti-slavery in 1842 and a slave hobble taken from the leg of a runaway slave remind us that the Sutliff family was very active in the Abolitionist movement, working for the cause of anti-slavery. Their old homestead on High Street in Warren, just east of St. Mary’s Church, was a stop along the Underground Railroad. The home is no longer standing.

Maps picturing early Trumbull County and the city of Warren indicate to present-day viewers the numerous changes that have taken place through the years. Tintypes, soapstone foot warmers, family Bibles and a heavy flat-topped stone to crack nuts on (a gift from an old Indian in the 1820s) show customs and usage. The plumb bob General Simon Perkins used in surveying this area in the late 1790s helps us to recall the old Connecticut Western Reserve.

Artifacts from the Philippine Islands taken from Mauro Indians during the Spanish-American War show tribal weapons, a betel box and an opium pipe.
