Civil War Commemoration
April 12, 2011

A special event commemorating the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War will be held at the Eastwood Mall Complex on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, between 3 and 6 p.m.

The Sutliff Museum CW 150 Committee sponsors the event. It will feature five areas of interest. Each area will display timely artifacts with informed volunteers. The areas of interest will include: the national election of 1860, the attack on Fort Sumter, a mock enlistment table with re-enactors in attendance, a showing of uniforms by types of service and a display of commemorative postage stamps. President Abraham Lincoln, portrayed by Jerry Payne, and William McKinley, portrayed by Mike Wilson, will also be part of the festivities.

Volunteers in costume will guide visitors to the activity area in the Eastwood Mall Center Court, where a presentation of the colors by Boy Scout Troop 101 from Howland will take place about 3:30 p.m. Following brief presentations by the day's speakers, the colors will be retrieved about 4:15 p.m.

A free, informative, locally-produced, six-panel brochure on the Civil War, entitled Conflicts That Sparked the American Civil War (1861-1865) will be made available to all visitors as a keepsake. [PDF 2 pages]

This opening event will be the first of a series of semi-annual events to be presented over the course of the four-year commemoration of the War. The planning committee includes: Sally Thomas, chair, Carole Babyak, Doug Babyak, Bruce Birrell, Alex Bobersky, Gina Boder, AmeriCorp coordinator Rachel Doddato, Lynn Griffith Jr., Larry Hardman, Roger Juntunen, Wendell Lauth, Hugh Mullen, Jan Rice, Harry Schoger, Bruce Thomas and Ray Vanderpool. Other supporting volunteers are Ron Heames, Sue Kindelburger, Emily Love, Eileen Patrone and Stephanie Sferra.

According to Wendell F. Lauth, a noted Trumbull County Historian, “Trumbull County men participated in major military operations in practically every sector where Union forces fought.” Students and their parents are urged to attend this event and the entire four-year series to commemorate and learn about what life was like during that time period and about those who actively participated in the American Civil War on both sides.

The CW 150 Committee has a particular interest in Civil War activity associated with Trumbull County people. Anyone who has special knowledge, artifacts or oral-type history may want to share that information with a volunteer at the Eastwood Mall Complex event on April 12. Write your name and phone number on a 3 x 5 card with a few words about your special knowledge and give it to one of the volunteers.
