Rachel Doddato, of Sharpsville, Pa., has accepted
the position of Assistant Curator at the Sutliff Museum in Warren. She
will be responsible for the Museum's collection management activities.
Ms. Doddato has a master’s degree in
history with a certificate in historic preservation from
Youngstown State University and brings to the Museum
experience in researching the Underground Railroad in
Northeast Ohio, a major focus of the Sutliff. “Her
experience in transcribing historic, hand-written documents
will be put to good use as she takes on the huge task of
establishing a database of our collection of historic and
personal documents from the Sutliff family,” said Sally
Thomas, Museum Curator. “She brings expertise and the
additional quality of personal charm to the job,” Thomas
added.
The Sutliff Museum, a memorial to Levi and Phebe
Marvin Sutliff, is the repository of hundreds of letters, diaries,
newspapers, pamphlets and other print materials relating to the
Abolition Movement, the Anti-Slavery Society, the Underground Railroad
and life in Victorian times. These materials have been preserved but
not made accessible because of their fragility. When they are
incorporated into a database, they will be available to interested
researchers with no danger to their safekeeping, according to Ms
Doddato.
Ms Doddato is also an Instructor in the
English
Department at Youngstown State University and Adjunct Professor of
History and English at Thiel College in Greenville, Pa., where she
designed the Introduction to Public History course that she teaches.
